D.O.T. Physicals

In the interest of public safety, the Department of Transportation (DOT) requires the examining physician to certify that each driver is free of any physical, mental or organic defect that could affect the driver's ability to safely operation commercial motor vehicle. Each candidate is carefully screened in accordance with DOT standard to assure compliance with physical requirements set forth in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.

A D.O.T. physical is to be completed at least every two years if:

  • Driving a vehicale of 26,000 + pounds.
  • Interstate material transporting
  • Driving a bus with a seating capacity of 15 or more passengers.

Physicals may be required by the DOT more often than every two years if there are deviations from standards, or in the case of specific conditions listed by the DOT.

Content of Exam

  • Each candidate is assessed for all conditions required by the DOT, including:
  • Complete history and examination performed by the doctor;
  • Urinalysis for specific gravity, glucose, blood, and proteins is performed on exam;
  • Vision and hearing activity are tested on each exam;
  • Blood pressure, heart rate, heart sounds, and lung sounds are assessed;
  • Referrals to appropriate health care providers are made for any deficiency or deviation from DOT standards;
  • All findings are communicated to the employer when applicable.


Upon completion of examination, the medical examiner's certificate is completed and given to the driver

Department of Transportation (DOT) Drug Testing Controlled Substance Testing

Interstate carriers must comply with D.O.T. controlled substance testing requirements contained in title 49 of CFR Part 391 and 394, issued in 1988.


The collection follows strict Chain of Custody in accordance with DHHS guidelines.

The collection area features a dry room with controlled water flow, bluing in toilet water, and light fixture vented to the ceiling. Specimens are temperature tested immediately after the test immediately after the collection. The professionals who administer the test are specially trained and take every care to assure that the specimen is viable and that the client is treated with dignity.


The D.O.T. drug screen is a urine test for five drugs of abuse. These drugs are amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, opiates, and PCP.

The GCMS (Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry) is used for reconfirmation. In legal cases, GCMS reconfirmation is always needed to provide accuracy of the test.


All test results are handled in a prompt professional manner. Positive results are evaluated by the Medical Review Officer who confers with the donor to ascertain circumstances surrounding a positive result. We will contact your company's designated contact and advice the positive or negative findings.

Pre-Employment Physicals

Pre-Employment is done to assure that the potential employees are capable to perform essential functions of the job. This can result in fewer injuries and future lower cost.

The physical examination includes blood pressure, pulse, height, weight, reflexes, visual acuity for color, depth peripheral, near and far vision, urinalysis to assess for glucose, specific gravity, blood, and protein, and general physical examination of the body.

Alcohol Testing

Homer Family Chiropractor uses the Lifeloc Pheonix 6.0BT for alcohol testing for pre-employment, post accident, random testing, or DOT purposes. This method provides accurate test results for any alcohol testing need.

"The FCMA regulation (49 CFR part 382) requires that you conduct alcohol testing on drivers performing safety-sensitive functions consistent with the provisions set forth in 49 CFR part 40. The initial sample must be collected through the use of a salivia device, a nonevidential breath testing device [alcohol screeing device (ASD)], or an evidential breath testing device (EBT) that is approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)"- FMCA Guidelines


Drug Testing
